Lord of the Mysteries started with two episodes on June 28, 2025. Both aired on the same day, and now the anime follows a weekly schedule. The power system in this anime/donghua is built on three things: potions, Pathways, and Sequences. The anime gave a short intro in episodes 1 and 2, but if you have not read the novel, a lot might seem confusing.
I have read the first 70 chapters of the web novel, so this article will explain what Beyonders are and how the system works.
This article contains spoilers from the Lord of Mysteries Web Novel (Chapter 1-70) and Episodes 1 and 2.
Who Are the Beyonders in Lord of Mysteries?
A Beyonder is a human who drinks a special potion and gains supernatural powers. But they don’t become a hero just like that. It is a risky process with strict rules. Most people don’t even know they exist. Beyonders work in secret, either under the seven main Churches or for private groups like noble families.
Groups like the Nighthawks, where Captain Dunn Smith works, are made up of trained Beyonders. Their job is to handle supernatural events in the dark, things normal people don’t know about.

How Do You Become a Beyonder?
You need a formula before you can become a Beyonder. This formula is like a recipe that lists exact rare ingredients. Most of these come from supernatural creatures or strange plants like Ghost Shark blood.
Humanity depends on potions in order to become Beyonders, with the name of the potions coming from the ‘Blasphemy Slate.

These formulas are not public. They are protected by the major Churches or found in special books. Once you have the correct formula, you can create the potion. Drinking it successfully makes you a Sequence 9 Beyonder. But if anything is wrong, you risk Losing Control, which I will also explain in the article!

Every Beyonder follows a Pathway. There are 22 total. Each Pathway is a unique type of power. Like the Seer Pathway, which helps with observation and prediction, or the Sleepless Pathway, used by the Church of the Evernight Goddess.
You cannot change your Pathway once you start. If you try mixing potions from different Pathways, you will lose control instantly.
If a person… consumes another path’s potion, they will lose control… where people become crazy and devilish.
Each Pathway is divided into Sequences, which are like power levels. You start from Sequence 9, the weakest, and go down to Sequence 0, which is the strongest and basically god-level.
The lower your number, the stronger you are. For example, Captain Dunn Smith is Sequence 7, which already makes him one of the strongest people in his city.
What Does Losing Control Even Mean?
Drinking a potion is not safe. If your mind or body can’t handle it, you Lose Control. This means one of three things:
- You go insane
- You die, and your body turns into a monster
- Your personality becomes twisted and cruel
There is no fix for this. Once you lose control, it is over. Old Neil from the Nighthawks explains that people lose control mainly because of these five reasons:
- Drinking a potion from a different Pathway than your own
- Advancing to the next Sequence before mastering the current one
- Using the wrong ingredients or a broken formula
- Being mentally unstable or corrupted by outside forces
- Choosing a Pathway that doesn’t match your natural body or spirit
This is why everything in the Beyonder system is designed to reduce this risk.

What is Acting Method?
Though I have already discussed this in another article, will explain it in this one as well. Just drinking the potion is not enough. You need to digest it. And for that, you need to “act” like the name of the Sequence. This is called the Acting Method, and most Beyonders don’t even know about it. Klein finds out about this by reading the diary of Emperor Roselle.
For example:
- If you are a Seer, you must act like a real seer. Stay calm, observe people, avoid direct contact, and analyze.
- If you are a Spectator, like Audrey, you have to quietly watch events without interfering.
Acting out your role helps you absorb the potion safely. Once it’s fully digested, you can move to the next Sequence without losing control.
Klein’s First Step as a Beyonder
After helping with the Antigonus notebook case, Klein earns his first potion: Seer, Sequence 9. Old Neil makes the potion for him using the formula. It looks like sticky blue liquid. When Klein drinks it, the pain is almost unbearable. He hears voices, sees hallucinations, and nearly breaks down. Old Neil teaches him a mental trick called Cogitation that helps him calm down. Though most of it was skipped in the anime due to pacing.
Klein survives and becomes a real Beyonder. He gains his first two powers:
- Spirit Vision: lets him see the colors around people that show their mood or health
- Spiritual Perception: gives him a sense when something is wrong or supernatural
The anime skips a lot of these details due to fast pacing, but I hope my guide will help you understand what Beyonders are, how their powers work, and why the system is so dangerous.
