What Are Sealed Artifacts?
Sealed Artifact is a supernatural item in Lord of Mysteries that is too powerful or too dangerous for public use. The seven major Churches collect and seal these items to prevent them from causing chaos. As Captain Dunn Smith explains in the web novel chapter 19, this is necessary because some of these items have dangerous, “living” characteristics.
Some of the extraordinary items we gather and retrieve are just too important and magical… Besides, there are some things inside that are very special. They had certain ‘living’ characteristics which can entice the Keepers. It would influence the surroundings, attempt escape, and cause catastrophic outcomes. They have to be strictly controlled.

The anime only briefly mentions this, but in the novel, Sealed Artifacts are properly explained and are ranked from Grade 0 to Grade 3.
EP 3/??

The Churches classify all sealed artifacts into four danger levels:
Grade 0 (Extremely Dangerous)
- Most powerful and deadly artifacts
- Stored only in Holy Cathedral basements
- Nobody can research or even look at them
- Example: Sealed Artifact 0-08
Grade 1 (Highly Dangerous)
- Very dangerous but can be used in limited ways
- Only bishops and deacons can access them
- Heavily restricted usage
Grade 2 (Dangerous)
- Dangerous but usable with proper precautions
- Captain-level Nighthawks can use them
- Stored in major city cathedrals
- 2-049 belongs to this category
Grade 3 (Considerably Dangerous)
- Least dangerous sealed artifacts
- Still require careful handling
- Need at least three official Nighthawks to request usage
Sealed Artifact 2-049 Explained
- Number: 2-049
- Grade: Grade 2 (Dangerous)
- Appearance: Small wooden puppet with clown face paint
- Storage: Black metal chest with mystical symbols that seals the artifact
- Origin: Made by the Antigonus family
The Antigonus family created Sealed Artifact 2-049. This is the same family that made the notebook which started all the trouble in the story. The puppet has a strong connection to anything related to the Antigonus family.

The puppet can control and turn people into human puppets. This process has two main stages.
The Sluggish Effect
When Sealed Artifact 2-049 is active, anyone within five meters becomes a target. The victim experiences:
- Extremely slow movements
- Jerky motions like a robot dance
- Slow thinking process
- Gradual loss of control
Complete Assimilation
If nobody breaks the victim out of the sluggish state they become fully controlled. The person turns into a human-sized puppet that follows 2-049’s commands.
- Normal Mode: Can only affect one person at a time
- Berserk Mode: Activates when detecting Antigonus family descendants
- Berserk Effects: Can control up to two people simultaneously

How Nighthawks Use Sealed Artifact 2-049 Safely
Since 2-049 was made by the Antigonus family it automatically moves toward any Antigonus descendants or their artifacts. The Nighthawks use this connection for tracking purposes.
The Nighthawks follows the following rules when using Sealed Artifact 2-049:
- At least three members must be present
- All members bend their arms repeatedly to stay alert.
- Everyone watches their teammates for signs of sluggishness
- Push any teammate who shows slow arm movements
In Lord of Mysteries Episode 3 the Nighthawks used 2-049 to track the Antigonus notebook. They followed it to a warehouse where they expected to find Ray Bieber. Instead they walked into a trap set by the suited clown from the Secret Order (Sequence 8, Clown).
The suited clown knew the Nighthawks would use 2-049 for tracking. In the fight, the clown ambush them sneakily when they barely survived another fight, and force them to separate so they could not help each other so that he could use sse 2-049’s power against them and turn them into puppets one by one.

Klein vs Clown in Lord of Mysteries Episode 3
During the fight Klein got caught in 2-049’s five-meter range. His teammates were unconscious. He was slowly being turned into a puppet with no way to break free. He needed an external force to save himself.

Klein performed the luck enhancement ritual like las time. This transfered his spirit into the gray fog dimension which we saw in episode 1 too. When his spirit left his body it broke 2-049’s connection. His physical body stopped being assimilated. He used this as an advantage as clown did not know Klein has broke free.
The Clown, who was a former Seer himself, tried to deceive Klein. He cornered him and offered to “help” him break free from 2-049’s control in exchange for the notebook.
Klein pretended to agree. When the Clown approached to “wake” him, Klein used the opportunity to pull him into 2-049’s five-meter range. The Clown, caught off guard, was immediately affected by the puppet’s sluggish power.
With the Clown slowed down and unable to dodge effectively, he became an easy target, Klein fired multiple bullets and killed the clown and saved the Nighthawk members and recovered the notebook as well.
Fun Fact: Before being defeated the clown revealed, the next sequence after Seer is Clown
