The plot of Lord of the Mysteries starts with the death of the original Klein Moretti. It looks like a normal suicide at first, but the web novel shows that it was not something he chose to do. He was controlled by a supernatural force from the start. The reason was not explained properly in the anime.

The Antigonus Notebook Was the Real Cause
Original Klein was helping his friends, Welch and Naya, study an old notebook from the Antigonus family. But this was actually not just an old record. It was a cursed object linked to a dangerous being.
All three of them died on the same day. Welch smashed his own head into a wall, Naya drowned in a small sink, and Klein shot himself in the anime and web novel. However, these were not accidents. The Nighthawks say that in cases like this, everyone who touches the item ends up dead. It follows a pattern.
Fun Fact: Antigonus Notebook is actually a Sealed Artifact, just like the Sealed Artifact 2-049 we saw in Episode 3. 2-049 was Grade 2 while the Notebook is actually Grade 1.
The Final Line in Klein’s Diary
Right before dying, Klein wrote one line: “Everyone will die, including me”. This was not written because he was depressed or had personal problems. It was a message forced onto him, and it clearly shows he was already under the influence of the notebook.
Why Klein Moretti’s Suicide Was Actually Forced in Lord of the Mysteries?
Cap Dunn Smith first suspects that these are not random deaths. The Nighthawks learn that the Secret Order was trying to recover the notebook.
In Chapter 46, the Nighthawks find a corpse later identified as Katy Stefania Bieber. Her son Ray Bieber is missing. Old Neil then shares a more detailed theory.
He guesses that Ray might be a descendant of the Antigonus family and suggests that the Antigonus Notebook made Klein hide it at Ray’s apartment to pass it on.
In Chapter 71, the Nighthawks use Sealed Artifact 2-049. It reacts strongly to the Antigonus bloodline and confirms that Ray is indeed a descendant.
In Chapter 77, after the team defeats the transformed Ray Bieber, they finally understand everything. The sealed artifact “Antigonus Notebook” forced the original Klein to:
- Take the notebook from Welch’s room
- Hide it at Ray Bieber’s house
- Kill himself to cover the trail and pass the notebook to a descendant
So Klein’s death was not caused by depression or fear. It was part of a supernatural plan.
How Zhou Mingrui Got Involved?
At the same time Klein died, Zhou Mingrui was doing a ritual on Earth to boost his luck. But the ritual was incomplete. It called a higher power but gave no clear instructions. So the being acted on its own.
When Klein’s body became empty, Zhou’s soul was placed into it. That is why Zhou wakes up in Klein’s body with a healing gunshot wound and remembers everything from his past life. The timing of both events connected them.
