Saku Sees the Name “Kaoruko” in The Fragrant Flower Episode 5

The Fragrant Flower Episode 5 begins in class, where Saku notices a note from Kaoruko in Rintaro’s notebook.

He immediately asks him what it means, but Rintaro just stays silent. He snatches the notebook back and refuses to explain. This silence makes things worse, and the rest of the class starts whispering.

From the outside, it looks like Saku is angry because Rintaro is hiding a relationship with someone from Kikyo Academy, their school’s rival.

Rintaro and Saku Avoid Each Other

Rintaro ends up distancing himself even more. He messages Kaoruko to thank her for helping him study, but then remembers Subaru’s warning to cut contact with her. He turns off his phone while Kaoruko is happy that Rintaro will now be able to attend the sports festival.

Meanwhile, Saku and Rintaro start avoiding each other. Shohei and Ayato both try to fix the situation, but Saku refuses to join them. Rintaro also says he has something else to do.

True Reason for Saku Natsusawa’s Anger in The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity Episode 5

Later in the episode, Shohei and Ayato catch up to Saku and finally convince him to talk. That is when Saku explains the real reason he is upset.

It has nothing to do with Kaoruko or school rivalries. He is upset because Rintaro did not trust them enough to share what he is going through. He says that when he first came to Chidori, it was Rintaro who made him feel like he belonged. Now that Rintaro is the one who needs help, Saku wants to support him the same way.

Saku just wants Rintaro to be honest with his friends instead of hiding everything.

Kaoruko’s Visit and Rintaro’s Guilt

While Saku is sharing his feelings with his friends, Rintaro is still struggling. At his family’s bakery, Kaoruko visits to celebrate passing the mid-term exams.

Once Rintaro’s mother leaves and asks Rintaro to take Kaoruko’s order, she asks for a high five, and Rintaro happily obliges, but Kaoruko notices something is wrong and tells him to eat more if he is feeling down.

Rintaro realizes how important Kaoruko is becoming to him, even though he knows it will cause more trouble. He remembers what Subaru said but finds himself unable to let go of his feelings.

Moreover, Rintaro does not realize that Saku is not mad that Rintaro is friends with a Kikyo student. He is hurt that his closest friend is pushing him away without an explanation.
