The future of Blue Box anime remains uncertain even though the manga is performing really well. The main issue is Netflix itself.
The anime has not been able to gain much traction on the platform because of how Netflix Japan is handling the release schedule.

Right now, Japan gets new episodes a week ahead of other regions. So by the time the episode officially drops worldwide piracy sites already have fan-subbed versions, meaning fans watch it elsewhere instead of on Netflix. This has led to lower viewership numbers on the platform.
For the first two weeks of airing, Blue Box stayed in Netflix Japan’s Top 10, but after that it disappeared from the rankings.

Meanwhile, anime like Sakamoto Days and The Apothecary Diaries are dominating the charts. Sakamoto Days has been #1 in Japan for three weeks straight while The Apothecary Diaries: Season 2 is in the Top 10 in six countries and has been sitting at #2 on Netflix Japan since its release.
While Sakamoto Days also deals with the same release issue it still manages to stay at the top because of its strong manga sales and genre appeal.

But romance anime, like Blue Box, don’t usually perform as well in terms of streaming numbers. This is also why many romance anime don’t get full adaptations.

A leaker on Twitter recently shared some interesting news about Blue Box Season 2. According to them, a second season of the anime Blue Box is being talked about! But of course, take this with a grain of salt since it could just be a fake leak.
Still, looking at how well the manga’s doing, TMS will probably go ahead with the second season, whether Netflix is involved or not.

Blue Box Manga is Booming
Despite the anime struggling on Netflix, the Blue Box manga has been on the rise. Since the anime was announced and started airing manga sales have jumped massively. According to Blue Box’s official Twitter account, the total copies in circulation are now at 7 million.
Here is how sales grew during the anime’s airing:
- October: 513,289 copies sold
- November: 255,805 copies sold
- December: 410,946 copies sold
- Total sales during anime airing: 1.18 million copies

What is Happening With Blue Box Anime?
Blue Box is a Netflix original which means Netflix has exclusive streaming rights. So it can not be released on any other platform except Netflix. That is why you do not usually see Crunchyroll talking about Blue Box.
TMS Entertainment is producing the anime, while Telecom Animation Film is handling the animation. Right now Blue Box Season 1 is still ongoing, it is divided into two parts.
Blue Box Anime started on October 3, 2024 and so far 18 episodes have been released on Netflix Japan. As for the story, the anime is currently adapting the 7th arc ‘Cultural Festival Arc’ while manga is on the 18th arc. There is plenty of content for Blue Box Season 2.
Blue Box Season 1’s first half ended at Episode 12 and the second half is ongoing and will wrap up with Episode 25.
Blue Box Season 1 Part 2 will most likely adapt half of Yumeka’s Return Arc before it ends and Season 2 is expected to cover the most awaited Confession Arc. If Netflix does not renew it for a second season, it’d be a huge missed opportunity.

Will Blue Box Get a Season 2?
The final decision is not up to Netflix alone. The production committee which includes Shueisha (the manga publisher and IP owner) and TMS Entertainment has the final say.
Netflix only influences the decision with its streaming numbers. Due to the low viewership from their release strategy there is a chance Netflix might not renew Season 2.
If Netflix cancels it, Telecom Animation Film and Shueisha might sell the rights to another platform like Crunchyroll Disney+ or Hulu or another streaming giant could pick up the series.
In the end, it all depends on Shueisha and the production committee. For now, Season 2 is still up in the air but with the manga’s strong performance there is still hope for the future of Blue Box.
Blue Box is licensed by Manga Plus by Shueisha and published in English through the Shonen Jump platform. According to Manga Plus, the story is described as:
