What Happened in Dandadan Season 2 Episode 2?

Momo and Okarun are still trapped underground, and the Mongolian Death Worm’s psychic waves are messing with their heads. It makes them feel like ending their own lives. Jiji is the only one not affected, and now we get why. He remembers stopping his parents from doing the same thing years ago. That is when he realizes they were under the same curse, not by choice.

Just as the worm corners Jiji, the Evil Eye shows up. Turbo Granny explains that the Evil Eye’s curse is canceling out the worm’s waves, which brings Momo and Okarun back to their senses. Okarun tries to fight using his yokai form, and manages to cut the head off, but the worm has instant regeneration ability.

The Evil Eye shows Jiji a vision of the past to manipulate him. He was once a child sacrificed to the same worm, and over time, he saw many more victims. That turned him into a vengeful spirit. Jiji feels bad for him and becomes the vessel for the Evil Eye.

Evil Eye then manages to drive away the worm and starts attacking Momo again. It was about to kill Momo, but Okarun arrived just in time and saved her. The episode ended on a huge cliffhanger with Okarun and Evil Eye clashing.

Animation and Direction

Dandadan Season 2 Episode 2 is handled very well visually. Most of it takes place underground, but the layout and lighting keep everything easy to follow.

After the Evil Eye takes over Jiji, the color palette shifts. Shadows get heavier, and a purple glow surrounds him to show his cursed energy.

The animation for his eyes uses glowing keyframes, and the purple aura is blended with textured effects instead of flat shading.

The fight between Evil Eye and the worm is short but clean. The animators avoid too many cuts and instead rely on good camera shakes and wide-angle motion to show power.

Momo vs Evil Eye Fight Sequence

One of the best parts of the episode is the short fight between Momo and the Evil Eye. After taking over Jiji’s body, Evil Eye suddenly kicks at her. Momo reacts quickly with a psychic shield. The animation here freezes slightly before the hit, showing her hesitation, but she manages to block at the end.

The cut is clean and does not skip frames or use blur at all. After pinning Momo to a wall, the Evil Eye walks away before turning back to the worm, as the worm attacked them with electricity, but the Evil Eye used a purple barrier to protect himself.

Later, he tricks her with grudge ball, she blocks it, but he changes direction and punches her from the side. The animation here switches pace fast but stays smooth.

Okarun vs Evil Eye

The last scene is the best-animated moment of the episode. As the Evil Eye is about to hit Momo with a final blow, we see the cursed ball reflected in her eyes. Just then, Okarun appears mid-air and blocks it using his own leg. Both characters clash with the cursed energy ball stuck between their kicks.

The background fades out, and only the purple energy and lighting stay in focus. There is no shaky cam or motion blur in this scene either. Okarun’s expression is clear as he delivers his line:

You bastard, you punched Momo-Chan. You are not getting away with that.

Okarun, Yokai Form!

The clash holds with no recoil. The leg hold shows balance and strength, and the impact is drawn with wide spacing to keep it readable. This is easily the most polished fight cut so far, even more than the Kito Family fight with Momo in Season 2 Episode 1.

Dandadan Season 2 Episode 2 keeps the flow tight with the right balance of action and emotion. Evil Eye’s appearance, Momo’s defense, and Okarun’s return are all handled smoothly without throwing off the pacing. The episode did not drop in animation quality anywhere.
