The classic monster-raising game from the 2000s is finally making a return. After years of silence, the team behind Moshi Monsters is working on a brand-new version of the game, which will be released in May 2027. It is starting with mobile first, then expanding to other platforms depending on support.

WaifuPulse received direct confirmation from Alexandra Amodio, VP of Product Marketing at Moshi Kids, who shared the official plan, game features, and why it’s coming back now.

I started playing Moshi Monsters back in 2012, thanks to an ex-friend who introduced me to it. It became more than just a game for us, it was also how we talked. The game had a friends tree, and you could message someone through it. It would show up as a sticky note on their pinboard, and anyone could read it. That is how we stayed in touch back then. It felt like a proper online world.

You could pick one of six monsters like Katsuma or Poppet, set your own colors, and get a house to decorate using Rox, the in-game currency. You could play mini-games to earn more Rox, buy clothes or furniture, and grow your garden to attract Moshlings, little creatures that became a key part of the game. You also had to feed and play with your monster to keep it happy and level up.

Why Was Moshi Monsters Shut Down?

The game officially shut down in December 2019, right before Adobe Flash was removed from browsers. Since the entire game ran on Flash, there was no way to keep it running. A final message from Roary Scrawl appeared on the website, with some codes and free items shared for players in the last few days.

Moshi Monsters was retired and shutdown in 2019 to prepare for the eventual shutdown of Adobe Flash, the software platform that Moshi Monsters ran on.

What is the Plan for the Moshi Monsters?

The new version of Moshi Monsters is launching first on iOS and Android, with PC and console versions coming later if the Kickstarter stretch goals are met. The team is targeting $2.5 million USD in funding, and Alexandra confirmed that the project is fully shaped around community feedback.

The story begins after a fictional asteroid, the Flash-teroid, hits Moshi Island. Monstro City is in ruins, Moshlings are scattered, and players will go on quests to rebuild the city and bring everything back.

Our core Kickstarter aim is to bring back Moshi Monsters on mobile with the backing and guidance of our fans to ensure this delivers everything that was loved in the original and more. With deeper exploration of the Moshi World and a new, quest-driven adventure story.

Alexandra explained that all original Moshlings will return, along with new ones from their later apps. The art style will keep the old look but updated for modern screens, and the gameplay will be quest-driven, with a bigger focus on exploration.

We aim to bring back all the Moshlings from the original, as well as those introduced in our subsequent Moshi apps. The art style will honour the original but with a modern polish that fits today’s devices for a blend of nostalgia and innovation. Our core Kickstarter aim is to bring back Moshi Monsters on mobile with the backing and guidance of our fans to ensure this delivers everything that was loved in the original and more. With deeper exploration of the Moshi World and a new, quest-driven adventure story.

The new Moshi Monsters will be an evolution that is deeply respectful to the original. Players will recognise nods to the classic look and feel, but
everything will be freshly illustrated. We want to delight returning fans while inspiring a new generation of players and create something that excites industry talent and brings joy to the team building it

Why Now?

It all started with a fan email. Someone reached out earlier this year and asked them to bring back Moshi Monsters. That small request led to internal talks, planning, and eventually the Kickstarter announcement.

The original team at Mind Candy, who also made titles like World of Warriors, Petlandia, and Moshi Kids, is now bringing the series back to where it began. The first version of Moshi Monsters was created by Michael Acton Smith in 2007 and officially launched in April 2008 after a short beta period. This new version will be fully updated for today’s devices, but still designed to give players that same feeling they remember from the original.

WaifuPulse will continue to track updates from the team as development moves forward. You can follow the progress or support the project through their official Kickstarter page.

Spread the love
