The Jujutsu Kaisen franchise is once again dealing with leaks. This time, it is not a manga chapter, it is actual footage from the new movie Jujutsu Kaisen: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death. The film is currently screening in Japan, but clips from the ending and main scenes have already started showing up online.

The movie started screening in Japan on May 30. But the international release, including North America, is still over a month away, scheduled for July 16. This gap between the Japanese and worldwide release is one of the main reasons why leaks happen so early. People outside Japan want to watch it first, and that hype makes others to record and upload whatever they can, even though it is illegal.

This kind of thing does not just happen with anime films either. It is common in Hollywood too. For example, when Marvel’s Thunderbolts got delayed in my city, but aired normally in others, I ended up seeing the Fantastic Four ship end-credit scene on social media through a snap from a friend. While that might not seem like a huge deal, it still kills the excitement. If all the surprise scenes and cliffhangers are already out there, it kind of removes the reason to go watch it in a cinema. And that directly affects how much profit a movie can make.

Jujutsu Kaisen Has Faced Leaks Before

This is not the first time Jujutsu Kaisen has been hit by leaks. Back when the manga was still running weekly, new chapters often leaked 3 to 4 days before the official release because of early magazine issues. Some fans even used those leaks to post full summaries and panels before the chapter came out.

Now, the same thing is happening with the movie version of one of the most emotional arcs in the series, Hidden Inventory / Premature Death, which focuses on Gojo and Geto’s past. Since it is a compilation film with some new edits for theaters, the hype is even higher, especially for fans outside Japan.

Recording inside cinemas is a criminal offense

After the leaks went viral, the Jujutsu Kaisen production team issued an official warning. They reminded everyone that filming inside theaters is a crime in Japan. It falls under the Movie Piracy Prevention Law, which is officially called the “Act on Prevention of Unauthorized Recording of Films”.

On top of that, sharing these illegally recorded clips on platforms like X (Twitter), YouTube, TikTok, or Facebook is also a violation of copyright law. If someone gets caught, they could face serious legal action, up to 10 years in prison, a fine of 10 million yen, or both in Japan (it is different in every country).

The staff has asked fans not to share any theater-recorded scenes online. It ruins the experience for others and also causes real damage to the movie’s success.

The global release is only a few weeks away, so international fans don’t have to wait too long. Watching the film legally with proper subtitles and audio is still the best way to enjoy it. And it helps animation studios like MAPPA continue making more content.
